Blogger Arraigned For Publishing Fake News In Ibadan

A 28-year-old man named Monisola Adebayo was charged by the police on Wednesday in an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan for allegedly publishing fraudulent information online.

Adebayo, whose address was withheld, is on trial on three counts that include publishing false information, conspiracy, and defamation.

However, he entered a not guilty plea to the accusations. Insp. Olagoke Adegbenro, the prosecutor, informed the court that the defendant committed the offenses in the Eleyele neighborhood of Ibadan sometime in 2024.

He claimed that the defendant and others plotted to discredit a nominal complainant named Mrs. Alice Oyinlola by publishing fake information. Adegbenro claimed that the defendant’s excessive internet remarks subjected Oyinlola to hate, disdain, and mockery.

According to him, the offenses are against sections 59, 375, and 516 of the Oyo State 2000 Criminal Law. The defendant was given N50,000 bail with two sureties in an equivalent amount by the magistrate, Mrs. Olasinmibo Sanusi-Zubair. She postponed the hearing until April 21.
