Nigerians may face power outages as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) on Wednesday commenced an indefinite strike over unresolved welfare and operational disputes with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
In a statement signed by Acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike on Wednesday, the union said the action followed the expiration of an ultimatum issued to TCN management.
The workers’ grievances include non-implementation of the national minimum wage, casualisation of staff, non-payment of salaries since April 2025, lack of operational vehicles, and failure to provide protective equipment and other essential tools. They also cited unpaid retirement benefits and unresolved issues arising from the unbundling of TCN.
“It is unfortunate that TCN management has decided to handle these issues with kid gloves,” the union said, directing members nationwide to withdraw their services until management meets its obligations.
The strike is expected to disrupt electricity supply across the country, recalling similar action in June 2024 which caused widespread outages.
As of press time, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah had yet to comment on the situation.
