Weird question but, have you ever eaten something illegal? I know, I know questions like how can food be illegal must’ve crept through your minds, but I bet this is true. Some countries have banned specific eateries. The reason could be that either they are not appropriate for human body, or the species being endangered. But something banned in one country could be easily available at the next. It’s just that some countries have had it in their laws to classify certain food items to be illegal. Now whatever be the reason, let’s just find out what and why are these banned.
1. Sassafras Oil
Once a common ingredient in tea and root beer, sassafras oil is extracted from sassafras tree. It was banned when the researchers found out it is carcinogenic.
2. Mirabelle Plums
Originally from Lorraine, France, these protected origin fruits are banned in The United States.
This fast food is acceptable across the world and is quite famous everywhere. However, you couldn’t just eat it in Somalia. They have banned it.
4. Sea Turtles
The importation and sale of sea turtles are banned in the US. You won’t find them in the states.
5. Poppy Seeds
These seeds have even landed people in jail. They are banned in Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Taiwan. These are seeds are considered illegal because they are derived from opium poppy plants and they contain opiates.
6. Pig’s Blood Cake
In Taiwan, pig’s Blood is used to make a cake which layered with sticky rice. This dish, however, is completely illegal in the US and other countries.
This is actually a fake fat which was invented by Proctor and Gamble (P&G). This fake fat was majorly found in fat-free snacks, but due to adverse health effects, this was banned in UK and Canada.
This Jamaican fruit makes it difficult for the human body to regulate its blood sugar. This can cause death, and maybe that’s why this fruit is illegal in many countries.
9. BHT and BHA
These preservatives are quite common and legal in the United States but are banned in the European Union and Japan.
In both the European Union and the United States, this highly toxic fish is either highly regulated or is completely illegal. This fish needs cautious preparation and if not done properly, consequences can be fatal.
11. Food Color
It’s not a food in itself but is majorly used in many dishes across the world to enhance the appearance. However, use of food coloring is illegal in the European Union.
12. Foie Gras
This dish is prepared by force-feeding corns to geese and ducks. It actually contains just the liver and since this act of force-feeding is considered inhumane, this dish is banned in many countries.
