Benue committed to security, grassroots development – Aondoakaa

The special adviser to Benue state governor on Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Denen Aondoakaa, Monday, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to grassroots development, emphasising healthcare, nutrition, security, and economic empowerment as key pillars of progress.

Speaking when members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) paid him a visit in his office, Mr Aondoakaa noted that security remains a top priority, especially in light of the persistent threats from suspected herders and kidnappers.

Aondoakaa revealed that local governments have contributed vehicles and motorcycles to bolster patrol efforts.

“If we don’t coordinate properly, the security situation will overwhelm us,” he warned.

He said his office is working to ensure peace and stability for farmers.

“This planting season, we are Working so that our people will experience peace,” Aondoakaa affirmed.

On financial matters, Aondoakaa assured that resources are being optimised. He explained that deductions made for the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) are pooled to respond to crises such as floods or attacks, depending on the need. “The main question is whether the funds are being utilised for the purpose they are meant—and I will say yes,” he declared.

He said the government is also addressing pension arrears, with Benue PENCOM actively working to resolve outstanding issues. “We are paying pensioners as at when due,” Aondoakaa confirmed, signaling progress in social welfare reforms.

Aondoakaa highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen primary healthcare systems across local government areas. He noted that the government is constructing residential quarters at healthcare centres to enable 24-hour service delivery.

“We are looking at healthcare and making sure that good nutrition is achieved,” he said, stressing that impactful execution of smaller projects often yields greater benefits than large-scale undertakings.

He also noted that training programmes for local council staff, once neglected, are being revitalised. “We have gone back to training and improving our staff at the local council level,” Aondoakaa stated, underscoring the importance of capacity building in sustaining development. He said the training will also improve efficiency.

Addressing political tensions in Otukpo, Aondoakaa acknowledged the right of elected councillors to question decisions of the local government chairmen, stating that “disagreement strengthens government policies.” He emphasised that local governments in Benue State operate with full autonomy, while the state government plays a coordinating role.
