Benue Assembly Speaker Steps Down Amid Political Tensions

In a surprising turn of events, the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Aondona Dajoh, has resigned from his position, effective August 24, 2025.

The announcement, made in a handwritten letter shared on his social media page with the caption “Let there be peace,” has sparked widespread speculation about the underlying reasons for his departure.

Dajoh, who represents Gboko West State Constituency, cited acting “in good faith and in the best interest of the state” as the motivation for his resignation.

In the letter, he expressed gratitude to his colleagues for the opportunity to serve as “first among equals” and pledged to remain committed to his legislative duties for his constituency.

The resignation comes just days after the Assembly suspended four lawmakers—Alfred Berger (Makurdi North), Terna Shimawua (Kian), Cyril Ekong (Obi), and James Umoru (Apa)—for six months over an alleged plot to impeach him.

The political atmosphere in the Benue State House of Assembly has been fraught with tension in recent weeks.

On August 22, 2025, the Assembly suspended the four lawmakers following a motion by Majority Leader Saater Tiseer, who accused them of attempting to destabilize the House with a “needless crisis.”

The suspensions, coupled with the Assembly’s rejection of a commissioner nominee and demands for the suspension of certain executive officers, have highlighted strained relations between the legislature and Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration.

Governor Alia, however, distanced himself from the turmoil.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor denied any involvement in efforts to remove Dajoh, emphasizing his “cordial and productive working relationship” with the Dajoh-led Assembly.

“The governor is not aware of and has no involvement whatsoever in any purported attempt to remove the speaker,” Kula stated, underscoring Alia’s commitment to supporting the legislature for the development of Benue State.

Dajoh’s resignation has raised questions about the stability of the Benue State House of Assembly and the broader political landscape in the state.

The Assembly’s recent actions, including rejecting Governor Alia’s request to screen commissioner nominees on August 8, 2025, due to “unresolved issues,” point to ongoing friction.

As the state awaits the appointment of a new speaker, Dajoh’s exit marks a pivotal moment for Benue’s political leadership.

He has vowed to continue serving his constituents diligently, but the ripple effects of his resignation are likely to influence the Assembly’s dynamics in the coming weeks.
