The Kanawa Basketball Tournament tipped off on Monday February 10th 2025, at the BUK Old Site basketball court.
Bayero University Kano (BUK) and Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUST) Wudil delivered commanding performances.
The host team, BUK, showcased their dominance with a well-rounded offensive display, averaging double-digit points in all four quarters to secure a resounding 55-15 victory over a competitive Baba Ahmed University side.

Khairun University displayed commendable ball possession but struggled with finishing, scoring 4 points against ADUST Wudil’s impressive 54.
With the NUGA preliminaries—originally scheduled for this month to be hostef by ADUST, Kano — postponed, the maiden Kanawa Basketball Tournament has been widely welcomed as a crucial platform for student-athletes.
Basketball enthusiast Dr. Abdulrahman Shaibu of the Dam Foundation emphasized the need to expand the competition to accommodate up to 32 teams in future editions.
National U-19 basketball team assistant coach, Sunusi Shuaibu, popularly known as Badway, highlighted the tournament’s significance in maintaining player morale and fitness amid the NUGA delay.
The competition features eight universities battling for supremacy over the next week, including Northwest University, Skyline University, El-Razi Medical University, and Federal University of Education, Kano.
Also present at the event was Professor Rabiu Muhammad, Director of Sports at Bayero University Kano, who praised the efforts of Basketball enthusiasts like Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha for his initiative in organising the tournament. He encouraged players to uphold the spirit of fair play, noting that such initiatives contribute immensely to university sports development.
