Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has debunked widespread social media rumors alleging that he impregnated Big Brother Naija reality star, Nengi Rebecca Hampson.
The speculation, which trended on social media on Monday, claimed that Nengi had recently given birth to a child allegedly fathered by the governor, who is rumoured to have four wives.
In response to the controversy, Nengi took to her X handle to categorically deny the claims.
“Let me be clear, I’m not pregnant for any governor,” she wrote in a series of posts.
Despite her outright denial, the rumours continued to spread across various online platforms.
Bayelsa Government Condemns Misinformation
Reacting to the development, the Director-General of New Media to the governor, Samuel Kolawole Oredipe, dismissed the reports as false.
In a Facebook post on Monday evening, he clarified that the reality star has no personal relationship with Governor Diri.
“Political enemies of His Excellency Senator Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State, are at work again. What a wicked set of people spreading falsehood on a day the Prosperity Administration commenced activities marking its 5th anniversary,” Oredipe stated.
He further condemned the misuse of social media to spread misinformation, emphasizing the need for regulation.
“Nengi Rebecca Hampson has no personal relationship with the governor. Nengi has come out on social media to debunk the lies. This is a distraction, and some of us are very justified in the many reasons offered to regulate the use of various social media,” he added.
The Bayelsa State Government has urged the public to disregard the baseless reports, attributing them to political detractors aiming to divert attention from Governor Diri’s 5th anniversary celebrations.
