Barcelona set to let Lewandowski leave for free after contract expiry

Barcelona set to let Lewandowski leave for free after contract expiry

Barcelona are reportedly planning to part ways with veteran striker Robert Lewandowski when his current deal expires, as the club does not intend to offer the 37-year-old a contract extension beyond June 2026.

According to Sport, the Catalan giants have decided against renewing the Polish striker’s contract, meaning he could leave the club as a free agent after four years of service.

Lewandowski’s stats and contributions

Lewandowski has scored 105 goals in 156 appearances for Barcelona since joining from Bayern Munich, including four goals in seven La Liga matches this season.

However, the club’s management reportedly believes it is time to phase in a long-term successor, given Lewandowski’s age and reduced pressing intensity.

A major salary cap reduction for the 2025/26 season is also said to have influenced the decision, limiting sporting director Deco and coach Hansi Flick’s flexibility in retaining high-earning players.

Barca eye younger striking options

The striker, who helped Barcelona win La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup, has rotated with Ferran Torres in attack this season, while the club continues to be linked with younger forwards such as Julian Alvarez, Erling Haaland, and Marcus Rashford.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Deco said: “We’re not going to talk about renewals in October. He’s one of the best strikers of recent years and has helped us a lot. But it’s not the time to discuss signings or extensions.”

Future uncertain ahead of 2026 World Cup

Despite his declining minutes, Lewandowski remains one of Europe’s most consistent finishers. He is expected to lead Poland at next summer’s World Cup, with a decision on his club future likely to follow after the tournament.
