Bandits Now Hiding Deep in Forests to Escape Air Strikes – Defence Minister

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has revealed that armed bandits and terrorists terrorising the northern region have resorted to hiding in dense forests and inaccessible terrains to evade deadly air bombardments by the Nigerian military.

The minister made the disclosure on Thursday during an interview with BBC Hausa Service, monitored in Gusau, Zamfara State.“We know where they are, but some of these locations are thick forests that our bombs cannot easily penetrate, or areas where airstrikes risk heavy civilian casualties,” Badaru said.

He described the recent wave of attacks, including school abductions, as classic guerrilla tactics.

“This is how guerrilla warfare operates: long periods of calm, then sudden, fear-inducing attacks that shock the nation,” he explained.

While admitting that banditry has not been completely eradicated, the minister insisted that the Armed Forces are “very close” to dismantling the criminal networks and have recorded significant progress.

On the recent kidnapping of schoolchildren and reports of security withdrawal before attacks, particularly the incident at the Federal Government Girls College in Maga, Kebbi State, Badaru assured that thorough investigations are underway.

“We are studying what went wrong and how to prevent recurrence. If any personnel are found wanting after the probe, appropriate sanctions will be applied,” he stated.

The minister also responded briefly to comments by U.S. President Donald Trump alleging persecution of Christians in Nigeria, saying Nigerian officials are actively engaging Washington to clarify the true situation and maintain strong defence cooperation.

“Nigeria enjoys defence partnerships with many countries. Discussions are ongoing, and by God’s grace, there will be full understanding,” he added.

Despite the setbacks, Badaru maintained that sustained military operations, combined with caution to protect innocent lives, will soon bring lasting peace to affected communities.
