Tragedy struck the Unguwan Mantau community in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, when armed bandits stormed a mosque during Fajr prayers, k!lling 13 worshippers in a brutal reprisal attack.
The early morning assault, which targeted Muslim congregants, has heightened tensions in the region and prompted immediate action from the state government.
Dr. Nasir Mu’azu, Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, confirmed the incident to journalists, describing it as a retaliatory attack by bandits following a successful community defense effort two days prior.
On Sunday, residents of Unguwan Mantau had ambushed bandits, k!lling several, rescuing victims kidnapped from Ruwan Sanyi village, and seizing three motorcycles and two AK-47 rifles.
The bandits, enraged by their losses, returned to unleash violence on the community.“The criminal elements launched a reprisal attack, targeting worshippers in the mosque during the Fajr prayer.
They shot sporadically, leaving 13 people dead,” Mu’azu stated. He noted that the bandits exploited the cover of crops during the rainy season to carry out their attack, a tactic commonly used to evade detection.
In response, the state government has deployed security reinforcements to restore calm in Unguwan Mantau.
The Nigerian Army’s Air Component Commander from the Forward Operating Base and the Nigerian Police Force are actively working to clear the area of bandits and prevent further attacks.
“We are committed to bringing these criminals to justice and ensuring the safety of our communities,” Mu’azu affirmed.
The government also commended the bravery of the Unguwan Mantau residents, saluting their “gallantry and disposition” in defending their community.
“We stand with the people of Unguwan Mantau and will continue to support community-based security initiatives,” Mu’azu added.
The state has extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and pledged unwavering support to combat banditry across Katsina.
