Bandits attack Kano community, kill one, abduct another

A fresh wave of insecurity has hit Kano State as armed bandits attacked Lakwaya Ward in Kururawa village, Gwarzo Local Government Area, killing one resident and abducting another in an overnight raid.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the village under the cover of darkness, shooting sporadically before whisking away a man, Yakubu Tsohuwa of Kururawa.

The incident has thrown the community into fear, heightening anxiety over renewed bandit activities in the state in recent times.

The latest assault follows a series of attacks and kidnapping attempts reported across rural communities in Kano, particularly around border areas shared with neighbouring states.

Confirming the incident, Auwalu Musa Yola, Zonal Information Officer, Gwarzo Zone, said the attack followed a familiar pattern—night-time invasions, abductions, and mounting pressure on vulnerable residents.

Following the attack, Mani Tsoho Gwarzo, Executive Chairman of Gwarzo Local Government, led a delegation to condole with the people of Lakwaya Ward. The delegation included members of the Gwarzo Legislative Council, the Local Government Secretary and his deputy, the Divisional Police Officer, as well as officials from the DSS, Immigration Service, Civil Defense Corps and other security agencies.

During the visit, Mani expressed deep sadness over the renewed violence and assured the community that security efforts would be intensified.

“We will take urgent measures to protect lives and property. This tragedy is unacceptable, and we are committed to preventing further attacks,” he said.

A security officer present at the scene also confirmed that additional measures—such as enhanced surveillance, intelligence gathering and increased patrol presence—had been deployed to forestall future assaults.

Fati, daughter of the abducted Yakubu, recounted the harrowing moment the kidnappers broke into their home and pleaded with authorities to intensify efforts to secure her father’s safe release.

Community leaders appreciated the prompt response by the local government, noting that the condolence visit boosted their morale in a period overshadowed by fear and uncertainty.

During the visit, Mani prayed for the repose of the deceased and the safe return of the abducted victim, extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the entire Lakwaya Ward community.
