The sudden demise of former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in the November 16, 2024 Ondo State election, Bamidele Akingboye, has taken a dramatic turn as one of his wives has been accused of playing a role in the tragedy.
Akingboye reportedly died last Wednesday at his residence in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lagos, at the age of 60.
Confirming his passing in a statement, his Personal Assistant and Media Adviser, Oyeniyi Iwakun, described him as “a man of integrity, a philanthropist, and a visionary leader.” He added that burial arrangements would be communicated to the public in due course.
However, SaharaReporters quoted a source who alleged that Akingboye’s death was not natural but linked to domestic violence.
According to the report, his wife allegedly pushed him off a balcony, resulting in fatal injuries. Disturbing images of his corpse, circulating online, appear to show bruises and deep cuts on his head and neck.
The late politician was also a prominent businessman, serving as CEO of Benshore Maritime, Clog Oil Systems, and President of WeAfrica Group. He was one of the major contenders in the 2024 Ondo governorship election, which was eventually won by APC’s Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Meanwhile, police authorities have confirmed that a discreet investigation is underway to establish the true cause of Akingboye’s death. Civil society groups and rights activists have also called for a transparent probe, warning against any cover-up in the high-profile case.
