Babachir Lawal Angry He Wasn’t Picked As Tinubu’s VP

Former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday, claimed that former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, was upset.

He said this was because President Bola Tinubu did not select him as his vice president.

Speaking in an interview on Channels Television, Wike revealed that Lawal visited him at his home in Port Harcourt while he was governor to express his disappointment.

“After President Tinubu chose Shettima as his vice president, Babachir Lawal visited me in my home in Port Harcourt.

“He was angry because he thought the president would choose him as his VP,” Wike stated.

He added, “He was fuming and told me directly that he had expected the position. You could see the frustration on his face.”

Wike also commented on the broader political context, saying, “Babachir is talented, but sometimes ambition blinds a person to reality. He believed the VP slot was his, but politics is never that simple.”

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had earlier dismissed Lawal’s claims, noting that he was reacting negatively because Tinubu opted for a “better, more qualified, and more refined candidate” as vice president.

Lawal had also asserted that the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, actually won the election that brought Tinubu to power.

Wike remarked on that too, saying, “He can say what he likes about the election, but his main grievance was personal. He wanted a top position and felt overlooked.”
