As a way of contributing its own quota to reducing challenges faced by orphanage homes in Nigeria, the Aviation Lions Club paid a humanitarian services visit to Christ Foundation Orphanage Home and Widows Outreach in Kuje, Abuja recently.
The club noted that it was all about making positive impacts in the lives of the less privileged and vulnerable in the society, a gesture they said, has the possibility of having a ripple effect on the larger society, as children impacted will grow up to become responsible members of the society and in return remember their root by ensuring the wellbeing of children in other orphanages.
During the course of the visit, Chris Najomo, president of Aviation Lions Club noted that the issue of orphans is something that is so dear to his heart. Coincidentally, he said, this aligns with one of the pillars of Lions International Club.
“The home and sense of belonging that these providers have given to these innocent children should be complemented by every member of the society. They never begged to be orphaned, so it could have been you or I. Orphanages accept children whose family members are either dead or are abandoned. Majority of the time, these homes are overwhelmed by financial challenges. This makes it imperative for people, whether as private individuals or corporate bodies to always extend a hand of fellowship towards them.
“That is the only way they can have that much-desired sense of belonging that every human craves and grow up to become responsible members of the society. Neglecting them creates a bigger problem to the society as they may grow up to become lonely, withdrawn, and sometimes suicidal and in extreme cases, they may decide to vent their anger and frustration on the society that ignored, rejected and abandoned them.”
Najomo called on members of the public to partner with humanitarian service organisations like Lions club in donating their time and resources to rescue and help these alienated members of the society.
Describing the atmosphere at the orphanage, Moninuola Olaiya, the Activity chairperson, described it as being warm and the children cheerful despite the challenges. Their reaction to the visit of the club, she said, was heartwarming.
“The children were visibly happy and grateful when we presented the donations (rice cartons of noodles, cartons of fruit juice, packs of bottled water etc) and spent time with them. Some of them even sang and danced to show their appreciation. The staff members also expressed their sincere gratitude, noting that the items and our visit would go a long way in supporting their daily activities. It was a fulfilling moment for everyone involved.
