Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Association of Local Governments in Nigeria (ALGON), Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and other stakeholders are expected to be part of a national discourse on Local Government Financial Autonomy to be hosted by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
According to a statement made available to Blueprint on Saturday in Abuja, the critical conversation would, among other things, aim at ensuring full compliance with the Supreme Court’s judgment in Attorney General of the Federation v. Attorney General of Abia State & 35 Others.
Signed by its General Secretary, Dr. Mobolaji Ojibara, the statement reads further: “This high-level engagement will bring together State Governors, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and the general public to interrogate the challenges hindering the full implementation of this landmark decision.
“The event schedule for February is expected to foster a robust and impactful dialogue on local government autonomy and to chart a path toward a more accountable and efficient local government system in Nigeria.”
The association while reaffirming its dedication to fostering meaningful dialogue to strengthen local government accountability and efficiency stated further: “This high-level engagement will provide an opportunity to interrogate the challenges hindering the full implementation of the Supreme Court’s judgment and chart a path towards a more accountable and efficient local government system in Nigeria.”
The NBA stressed that the discourse represents a significant step in its commitment to promoting good governance and ensuring compliance with judicial decisions in Nigeria.
