Hon. Olamijuwonlo Alao-Akala, the lawmaker representing Ogbomoso North, South, and Orire Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the underrepresentation of women in Nigeria’s parliament.
Alao-Akala, who led Nigeria’s delegation to the 11th Inter-Parliamentary Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians in Lima, Peru, said the Reserved Seats for Women Bill currently before the National Assembly marks a significant step toward achieving gender equality in political representation.
Speaking at the conference, themed “Uniting Generations for Gender Equality,” the lawmaker emphasised the importance of collective action in accelerating progress toward equality between men and women.
“It was a pleasure to meet the President of the Congress of Peru, José E. Jeri, along with other visionary parliamentarians from across the world, as we explored ways to strengthen parliamentary cooperation and advance gender equality,” he said.
The conference, which drew young lawmakers from different regions, placed a spotlight on the global challenge of women’s underrepresentation in politics.
The former Oyo State Governor’s son noted that Nigeria remains committed to tackling the issue through legislative reforms designed to give women greater access to elective positions.
