ASUU Slams FG’s Slow Response as 14-Day Strike Ultimatum Nears End

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused the Federal Government of dragging its feet in addressing the union’s longstanding demands, as a 14-day ultimatum to avert a nationwide warning strike is set to expire on Sunday.

The warning, issued to press for action on unresolved issues, has heightened tensions in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, with ASUU signaling readiness to disrupt academic activities if demands remain unmet.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Thursday, ASUU President Chris Piwuna expressed frustration over the government’s delayed response, describing its last-minute appeal to halt the planned strike as “a little too late.”

Piwuna emphasized that the union’s grievances, including funding for university revitalization, renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, and payment of withheld salaries, have lingered for years without concrete resolution.

President Bola Tinubu has reportedly directed relevant authorities to take urgent steps to prevent another disruption in the nation’s universities.

However, with the ultimatum’s deadline looming, ASUU remains steadfast, accusing the government of failing to prioritize education.

“We’ve been patient, but the government’s inaction leaves us no choice,” Piwuna stated, underscoring the union’s commitment to securing better working conditions and infrastructure for Nigeria’s academic institutions.

The looming strike threat has sparked concerns among students and parents, who fear another prolonged academic shutdown.

ASUU’s demands also include addressing the proliferation of universities without adequate funding and implementing agreements on earned allowances and university autonomy.

As Sunday approaches, all eyes are on the Federal Government to see if it can avert the crisis and restore stability to Nigeria’s higher education system.
