As the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) continues its two-week warning strike, now in its fifth day, the union has urged the Senate to address critical issues plaguing Nigerian universities, including inadequate funding for research, infrastructure, and staff remuneration, which ASUU claims is the lowest in Africa.
The strike, which began on October 13, 2025, stems partly from allegations that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory plans to seize land belonging to the University of Abuja.
Additionally, ASUU opposes the Ministry of Education’s decision to distribute a portion of the ₦50 billion allocated to universities among polytechnics and colleges of education.
ASUU praised President Tinubu for approving ₦150 billion for universities and imposing a seven-year moratorium on establishing new public tertiary institutions.
As discussions with lawmakers continue, the Senate is urging both parties to find a compromise to resolve the ongoing dispute.
