Arewa Youth Movement Demands Police Probe into Politicians’ Alleged Links to Banditry

The Arewa Youth Movement (AYM) has submitted a petition to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), calling for a robust investigation into politicians allegedly involved in banditry and violent crimes across Northern Nigeria.

The group emphasized that no public official, regardless of status, should be exempt from accountability.

During a press briefing in Abuja on September 6, 2025, AYM spokesperson Comrade Yahaya Muhammed Garba highlighted the escalating insecurity in the region, attributing it partly to the complicity of high-ranking individuals who reportedly support criminal networks.

Garba alleged that certain politicians maintain connections with notorious bandit leaders, facilitate medical treatment for injured fighters, and incite violence in areas such as Tafawa Balewa in Bauchi State and parts of Plateau State.

“Reports of individuals aiding wounded bandits with medical care and fueling violence in Tafawa Balewa and Plateau are utterly unacceptable,” Garba stated.

While commending federal security efforts, he stressed that these initiatives are being undermined by political figures allegedly shielding criminals.

The AYM praised the sacrifices of security operatives, noting the challenges they face, including being outnumbered and under-resourced.

“Their morale is tested daily, and we must support their mission to protect citizens,” Garba added.

The group also decried the growing menace of kidnapping, which has become a lucrative venture for criminals, fostering a climate of fear among families.

The AYM reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for justice, peace, and safety in Northern communities, urging security agencies to act swiftly and transparently to restore public confidence.

The group’s petition follows other regional concerns, including protests over a Kaduna bombing and demands for investigations into industrial practices in the state.
