The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won the chairmanship
seats in 20 LGAs in the Rivers state council elections.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won in three LGAs.
Michael Ekpai Odey, chairman of the Rivers State Independent
Electoral Commission (RSIEC), announced the results on Sunday.
Siminalayi Fubara, the suspended governor of the state, lost
his Opobo-Nkoro LGA to the APC.
Fubara and his supporters were absent on Saturday during the
elections.
RSIEC conducted the polls under the supervision of Ibok-Ete
Ibas, the sole administrator of the state.
After exercising his franchise, Nyesom Wike, minister of the
federal capital territory (FCT), said the “coast is clear” for the termination
of the emergency rule in Rivers state.
The former Rivers governor said the exercise was largely
peaceful while he countered reports of voter apathy.
Wike also dismissed concerns over the non-compulsory usage
of the bimodal voter accreditation system (BVAS) in the election.
President Bola Tinubu had declared a state of emergency in
Rivers earlier this year following heightened political crisis and instability
in the state.
He also suspended Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu; and all
members of the Rivers assembly for six months.
In June, Wike, Fubara and members of the state assembly
attended a peace meeting hosted by Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
