Furious residents blocked major highways in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, on Thursday, paralyzing traffic after a truck accident claimed eight lives, including a pregnant woman and a 200-level Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) student, the previous night.
The deadly crash occurred opposite the Anglican Church near the university entrance when a speeding truck lost control, veered off the road, and slammed into pedestrians and a barricade.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed eight fatalities: five males, two females, and one male child.“The truck ran into a barricade in front of AAUA due to reckless driving,” said Sector Commander Samuel Ibitoye.
Emergency responders recovered bodies trapped beneath the vehicle as the community reeled in shock.
By morning, irate youths and locals barricaded the highway, halting movement in and out of the town and demanding urgent government action to stop recurring fatal crashes.
“We can’t keep burying our people,” said resident Bimpe Adeleke. “One man lost his wife and son overnight.
This road must be fixed now.”Police, led by Commissioner Adebowale Lawal, worked to clear the wreckage and restore order amid rising tensions.
