ONITSHA The chairman, Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Anambra State chapter, Dr. Anthony Ugozor, has called on President Bola Tinubu to adopt proactive measures to cushion the adverse effects of economic downturn, demanding wage review for the benefit of pensioners in the state.

According to him, the constitution provides that there should be review of pension every five years or with the review of civil servant salaries, whichever one comes first.

Ugozor who made this known to newsmen in Awka, Anambra State, yesterday, revealed that his leadership prevailed on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to ensure an increase in monthly pension payment as provided in Section 210(3) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) to no avail.

He also as condemned the plight of a pensioner in Anambra State who at a time received the sum of N330 monthly pension earning, leading to October 2023 request to the governor for harmonization

The former Chairman of Nigeria Union Labour Congress (NLC) flayed the initial denial of the letter to the governor through the Office of the Head of Service, but expressed happiness with the eventual announcement of increase in pensions earning by N10,000 each retiree including the retired directors till date.

He observed that their recent frivolous petition to the headquarters was an expression of frustration and fear of his possible re-election on account of his popularity, recalling a parley he had with the retired directors in Awka, the State capital on 5th December 2024 who sought for his intervention for increase in pension and harmonization o f pensions as well as bigger pay than other pensioners and explained the governor’s indifference.
