Former Young Progressives Party (YPP) councillorship candidates in Nnewi North Local Government Area (LGA) at 2024 Anambra state council poll, Tuesday, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the party’s April 6, 2025 primary.

The former YPP members, who are mostly supporters and allies of the late Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial district, Dr Ifeanyi Ubah, also vowed to support Sir Paul Chukwuma to emerge as candidate of APC and eventual winner of Anambra state gubernatorial election owing to his leadership capacity and vision for the state.
Among them were Hon. Amobi Okonkwo, former YPP candidate for Otolo Nnewi Ward 1 and Senior Special Assistant to Senator Ifeanyi Ubah on Persons with Special Needs, Hon. Chigbo Uzor, the YPP Secertary in Nnewi North LGA and former candidate for Otolo Nnewi Ward 2, and Hon. Ugochukwu Ofodile (Otolo Nnewi Ward 3).
The defectors in a joint statement at the event also described Chukwuma as a “round peg in a round hole” insisting that he was capable of transforming Anambra State due to his “unbeatable capacity to lead.”
The APC LGA Coordinator for Chukwuma’s primary campaign, Hon. Nonso Smart Okafor, who welcomed the defectors, described their move as a sign of growing confidence in APC’s ability to lead Anambra.
