Amorim says fear gone as Manchester United eye win against Brentford

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says he no longer approaches matches with fear, insisting his team now carries belief heading into every game.

United travel to Brentford on Saturday seeking back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time in more than a year, following their 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Old Trafford last week.

Amorim admitted that in the summer he often felt his side would lose before matches had even begun, but believes the atmosphere around the squad has shifted.

“No, completely different now,” he said. “I always have the feeling that we can win the next game and we can be dominant. Sometimes in the small things, the urgency, it’s completely different now.”

United’s progress questioned

The Portuguese coach, who has been in charge for 10 months, has yet to secure consecutive league wins.

His only sequence of three straight victories came in January with back-to-back Europa League wins over Rangers and Steaua Bucharest alongside a league triumph against Fulham, before losing to Crystal Palace.

Despite two wins and two losses from United’s opening five league games this season, Amorim says the squad now has the mentality to challenge.

“I look at my team and I am going to play against City, Arsenal, and I am feeling we can score goals, we can be dominant,” he said. “It is more excitement than fear this year.”

Amorim stressed the importance of building on the Chelsea result. “If we as a team don’t understand the momentum now, we have a big problem.

“The opportunity that we have to win the next game is on us. It’s in our hands to change things,” he said.

United last managed consecutive Premier League victories in September 2023.
