Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has backed Nigeria to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying the team remains determined to fight until the end despite recent setbacks in the qualifiers.
Speaking in an interview with SuperSport, the Fulham star said belief within the squad remains strong, and that the players are focused on turning things around in the final stages of the campaign.
“Of course, we believe that we’re going to go to the World Cup; otherwise, we wouldn’t be here,” Iwobi said. “We’re going to try and do our best, so hopefully the fans can continue to believe in us as well.”
Nigeria, who currently sit third in Group C after a mixed run of results, must win their remaining matches and hope other results go their way to secure a ticket to the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Despite the pressure, Iwobi believes the Super Eagles have the quality and mentality to make it happen.
“The team knows what is at stake. We’ve been working hard in camp, and everyone is giving everything. We just need to stay focused, stay united, and take each game as it comes,” he added.
Iwobi also spoke about the atmosphere in the team, saying the presence of fellow Nigerians Calvin Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze at Fulham has strengthened their bond both on and off the pitch. “It’s nice to have Samuel join us, not just because he’s Nigerian, but because he’s a great player and a great person. We’re technically Naija FC now,” he joked.
Naija News reports that Alex Iwobi recently equalled Shola Ameobi’s record for the most Premier League appearances by a Nigerian. He and his Super Eagles teammates will be in action from 5 p.m. (Nigerian time) today when they take on Lesotho in a must-win World Cup qualifier.
