Akwa Ibom Police Dismantle Robbery Syndicate, Recover 72 Phones, Stolen Goods



The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended a notorious robbery gang using tricycles to target residents in Uyo and surrounding areas, recovering three tricycles and 72 stolen mobile phones.

During a press briefing on October 17, 2025, at the Command Headquarters in Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo, Commissioner of Police (CP) Baba Mohammed Azare announced the breakthrough. 

He detailed a July 3, 2025, incident where Aniekan Dan, 41, and his wife were robbed at gunpoint by a tricycle gang while traveling from Ibesikpo to Uyo. 

The robbers stole an iPhone 12 Pro Max, an iPhone 16, a Samsung S22, cash, and other valuables. 

The victims’ identification of the tricycle’s MOT number (MOT–0BMR) enabled police to track down the culprits.

Following intelligence-led investigations, operatives arrested the tricycle driver, Editi, 34, whose confession led to the apprehension of four accomplices: Musa Idris Sanni, 31; Utibe Asuquo Nkop, 34; Dadati John, 46; and Abdulrashid Sanni, 28. “Our Command is committed to ensuring residents sleep soundly,” CP Azare affirmed, urging victims to visit the Uyo Area Command with proof of ownership to reclaim recovered items. 

The suspects will face court proceedings post-investigation.In a related operation on October 13, 2025, police intercepted a tricycle (registration: 298 WZ) along Nasarawa Road, carrying five suspects and assorted new household items, including five industrial fans, two microwave ovens, a bicycle, 50 stabilizers, three electric kettles, two Startime decoders, four pressing irons, and a DVD player. 

The arrested suspects—Muhammed Saifuana, 32; Musa Abdulahi, 27; Samaila Sauwanu, 21; Mubansir Abubakar, 20; and Adamu Umar, 25—are under investigation to determine the items’ origins.

CP Azare reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance policy on crime, vowing to pursue criminals relentlessly. 

“These cases portrays the value of citizen vigilance and our officers’ proactive response. We urge residents to continue partnering with the police to protect lives and property,” he said.
