The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Akwa Ibom State chapter, has impeached its Chairman, Dr Emem Abraham and the Vice, Dr Aniekan Utuk, over alleged “gross misconduct”.

Dr Usenobong Morgan Akpan, the association’s Secretary, was appointed as Acting Chairman until the tenure of the present administration ends on 16th July, 2024.

Addressing journalists at a press conference at Doctors’ Mess, Uyo, the Acting Chairman, Akpan, said the impeachment followed a motion moved during the association’s Ordinary General Meeting.

Giving a breakdown of the alleged gross misconduct which led to the impeachment of the duo, Akpan listed abnormalities in the presentation of financial reports, suppression of views during congresses, inconsistency in financial figures and lack of proper accountability, among others as the grounds that occasioned the development.

Akpan argued that his appointment as the Acting Chairman was in accordance with the association’s Constitution, given that until his elevation, he was the highest office holder and most qualified to run the affairs of the NMA.

He said the press conference was to notify the public of the new administration of the NMA in Akwa Ibom State.

“We are here to notify the public of the change in leadership of the NMA. Our request is that, following the resolutions by the Congress, everyone should cease to recognise the Chairman and her Vice, and all the privileges accorded them are hereby withdrawn.”

On whether he would contest the forthcoming election of the association coming up in July this year, Akpan declared that he was not interested in the contest, and therefore, would not vie for any position.

Efforts to speak with the impeached chairman, Dr Emem Abraham, were not successful as her lines were unreachable.
