The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has officially unveiled Amadeus University, Amizi, in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, urging its promoters to uphold high academic standards.
Speaking at the event, Akpabio stated that education is the most powerful tool to combat ignorance, poverty, and underdevelopment. He tasked the institution’s leadership with sustaining the university’s academic goals.
Represented by the Senator for Abia Central District, Austin Akobundu, Akpabio expressed confidence that the university would produce graduates capable of reshaping the country’s future.
“From what I have seen on the ground so far, I have no doubt that Amadeus University will, in the near future, produce people who will reshape the fortunes of this country,” he said.
The Senate President recalled his tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, during which he made primary and secondary education free and compulsory, emphasising his belief that knowledge is power.
Describing universities as “future factories of knowledge and development,” Akpabio warned against neglecting education, stating:
“A nation that fails to educate its youths has already written its obituary. Education and knowledge should be the twin pillars on which our nation stands.”
He urged students to work hard to overcome present challenges, stressing that there are no shortcuts to success.
Earlier, the founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the university, Dr Godwin Nwabunka, said the institution was established to empower, inspire, and shape the next generation of African leaders.
“Our mission is clear—to produce graduates who are academically excellent, morally grounded, and globally competitive.
“Our ambition is to harness the richness of this land, from the strength of our community to its abundant natural resources, and use them as a catalyst for wider development.”
He added that the university would prioritise research outcomes that translate into industrial applications and societal advancement.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel Nzotta, said the management was focused on establishing collaborations with international institutions and professional bodies.
“The university has also commenced action on establishing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). These collaborations will ensure that our programmes comply with professional standards,” he stated.
The event also marked the university’s inaugural matriculation ceremony.
