Akpabio, Akume, Musa, Others Attend Interfaith Special Service for Nigeria at 65

Top Nigerian government officials, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, gathered at the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja on Sunday for a special interfaith service marking Nigeria’s 65th anniversary of independence.

The solemn event, organized by the Federal Government, served as a prelude to the official Independence Day celebrations scheduled for October 1.

It brought together a constellation of political, military, and security leaders to offer prayers of gratitude and supplication for the nation’s enduring spirit amid its multifaceted challenges and triumphs since gaining sovereignty from British colonial rule in 1960.

Among the distinguished attendees were Akpabio and his spouse, who arrived early to join the congregation; Akume alongside his wife; Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun; former Plateau State Governor and Senator Simon Lalong; and a cadre of service chiefs led by General Musa.

The lineup also featured Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogala, Chief of Naval Staff; Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun; Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service Kemi Nandap; and Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service Sylvester Nwakuche.

The service, infused with hymns, readings from sacred texts, and collective intercessions, underscored themes of resilience, renewal, and collective responsibility.

As Nigeria stands at the threshold of its 66th year as a republic, the gathering highlighted the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to harness the energies of public institutions, the private sector, civil society, and ordinary citizens toward a more prosperous future.

Earlier this month, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation announced the official theme for the 65th Independence celebrations: “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation.” Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the office, elaborated that the theme encapsulates Nigeria’s journey of perseverance through economic upheavals, security threats, and social transformations.

“It calls for unity and collaboration to consolidate our hard-won gains and propel us toward even greater heights,” Imohiosen stated in a press release, emphasizing patriotism as the bedrock of national progress.

While specific speeches from the service were not immediately detailed, sources close to the event described an atmosphere of quiet optimism, with leaders exchanging nods of solidarity and reflecting on the sacrifices of past generations.

The National Ecumenical Centre, a symbol of inter-religious harmony in the capital, reverberated with calls for peace, economic revival, and strengthened governance—echoing the broader national discourse on inclusivity and development.

Nigeria’s path to 65 has been marked by remarkable milestones, from its emergence as Africa’s most populous nation and a key player in global affairs, to navigating civil strife, oil booms, and democratic transitions.

Yet, as the country grapples with inflation, youth unemployment, and regional insurgencies, events like this service remind stakeholders of the imperative for “all hands on deck.”

As the week progresses toward the main anniversary parades and fireworks, this spiritual overture sets a tone of introspection and resolve.

For many Nigerians, it is a timely reminder that the nation’s story—forged in diversity and determination—remains a work in progress, one prayer at a time.

The Federal Government has promised a series of events across the country, including cultural exhibitions and youth forums, to engage citizens in this milestone observance.

More details on the full schedule are expected imminently from the Ministry of Information and National Orientation.
