In a historic event marking a new chapter for Adamawa State’s traditional leadership, Alhaji Ahmadu Saibaru has been officially installed as the first Emir of the newly created Maiha Emirate.
The coronation ceremony, which took place on Thursday, was presided over by the Executive Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who also presented the Staff of Office to the new Emir.
Speaking at the event, Governor Fintiri highlighted the significance of the creation of new emirates and chiefdoms in Adamawa State, emphasising their role in strengthening local governance, preserving cultural heritage, and enhancing peace and security. He noted that the establishment of the Maiha Emirate was part of a broader effort that had already seen similar installations in Fufore, Yungur, and Gombi, with upcoming ceremonies planned for Hoba, Madagali, and Michika Chiefdoms.
“The creation of these emirates and chiefdoms represents a bold move to modernise the traditional institution while simultaneously preserving its cultural significance. These new entities will serve as centres for dispute resolution, strengthen social cohesion, and improve security and development across the state,” Governor Fintiri stated.
The event attracted distinguished dignitaries from within Adamawa State, neighbouring chiefdoms, and even across the border in Cameroon, underscoring the deep cultural and economic ties between the regions. Governor Fintiri stressed the importance of fostering strong relationships across borders for mutual growth and regional stability.
Addressing concerns over the restructuring of the traditional institution, Governor Fintiri reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peace, unity, and good governance. “We recognise that constructive criticism is essential, but we will not allow baseless accusations to derail our efforts. These reforms are meant to empower traditional leaders and create a more inclusive and responsive system of governance,” he said.
The governor also lauded the economic potential of Maiha, particularly its reputation for producing the famous Bullam dress, a cherished cultural attire. He noted that Maiha’s proximity to the commercial hub of Mubi and its border with Cameroon presents opportunities for expanded trade, agriculture, and industry.
In his congratulatory message to Emir Ahmadu Saibaru, Governor Fintiri urged him to lead with inclusivity, fairness, and justice, ensuring that all ethnic groups within the emirate, including the Njanyi, Bata, Fulani, Kanuri, and Holma, are treated with equal respect. He also called on the Emir to prioritise security and maintain a strong and cordial relationship with both local and state governments.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of the Staff of Office to Alhaji Ahmadu Saibaru, officially marking his ascension as the first Emir of Maiha Emirate. The event was met with celebrations and excitement from the people of Maiha, who expressed optimism about the future of their newly established emirate under the leadership of the new Emir.
