Agbedi: PDP Will Be Ready For 2027 With Stronger, United Front

Chairman of the South-South Caucus of the House of Representatives, Hon. Fred Agbedi, has expressed confidence that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will emerge stronger, united, and well-organised ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE NEWS on Monday, Agbedi stated that despite the party’s past challenges, the PDP remains resilient and committed to repositioning itself for victory.

“PDP is strong enough. PDP will be stronger. PDP will be well organized. PDP will be ready for 2027,” he said.

When asked about internal conflicts and anti-party activities, the lawmaker dismissed fears of mass defections and explained that the party’s focus is on rebuilding its structure rather than chasing individuals.

“It’s not about Wike alone. It is beyond Wike. You know, there are a lot of others who have played anti-party in one way or the other, who are members of PDP, who are saying, ‘No, no, no, I’m going to support so-and-so person, I’m going to vote for so-and-so person.’ That’s clearly anti-party. But because PDP understands the kind of crisis it is going through and is resolving, it will not be chasing those people. Rather, it will organize itself first before it thinks of the appropriate way to deal with matters like that.”

Addressing concerns about disciplinary measures against those accused of undermining the party, Agbedi explained that strategic patience was necessary for the PDP’s survival.

“There are certain decisions that if you are the leader, you cannot take in a hurry. You take time, you navigate the contour in such a way that if you are taking a decision, the decision will lead you to land safely. As of today, I don’t think that the priority of PDP will be to be driving one person or the other out of the party. We know those who are playing some excessive roles, some actions that are inimical to the destruction or survival of the party. We’re taking note. And I’m sure that at the appropriate time, appropriate actions will be taken by the party.”

Agbedi further dismissed claims of mass defections, insisting that many members believed in the PDP’s capacity to lead Nigeria to recovery.

“If you saw and watched today’s NEC meeting, a number of faces that you thought had defected to other parties, you saw in those coalition meetings, were at the NEC meeting today. And so that tells you that it’s not as if people are running away from PDP. People are not defecting en masse from PDP. That’s not the thing. People are trying to see how we can salvage Nigeria. And if there are certain overbearing characters in PDP, where can we find solace to be able to save Nigeria? That’s the kind of movement that you see people having, attending one kind of meeting or the other within the opposition bracket.”

The South-South Caucus Chairman expressed optimism about the future of the party, maintaining that the PDP’s experience in navigating crises positions it as a formidable force ahead of the 2027 elections.

“PDP has experienced a number of crises and has come out of them stronger. That’s what I’m telling you, we have the experience of navigating our way to success. PDP is strong enough…And I can assure you, no opposition, no opposition, can run an election in this country without PDP.”
