Lagos has officially become the first African city to host the E1 Electric Powerboat Championship, as the historic Lagos GP kicks off today, October 3, on the Lagos Lagoon near Victoria Island. The event runs through October 5, marking a milestone for Nigeria and Africa in international water sport competition.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the event as more than just racing. “The E1 Lagos GP is more than a race, it is a celebration of innovation, sustainability and experience for all. It is Lagos’ story to be passed. Join us at Lagos Races. This is Lagos. This is the E1 Lagos GP,” he declared.
The E1 series began in January 2024, with races already staged in Jeddah, Doha, Venice, and Monaco. Lagos now joins the global roster of prestigious host cities, placing Nigeria firmly on the sporting map.
The championship requires every team to feature both male and female pilots, ensuring gender balance while highlighting inclusivity in global sport. Its strong emphasis on clean technology aligns with Lagos State’s push for innovation and sustainability in marine transport.
Officials have also warned residents to prepare for significant traffic disruptions along Ozumba Mbadiwe and Lekki axis, as the government has rolled out a two-day road diversion plan to accommodate the races.
The championship is expected to boost tourism and inject economic activity into Lagos, with thousands of visitors anticipated. Organisers and state officials say the event represents energy, culture, and possibility, defining Lagos as both Africa’s cultural heartbeat and economic powerhouse.
