13 hours ago 22

With the interest indicated by 21 clubs so far ahead of the continental piece, Nigeria has broken record of attracting the highest number of teams for the African Women’s Club Volleyball Championship.

President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), Engr. Musa Nimrod, expressed this on the sidelines of the closing ceremony of the President Beach Volleyball Championship at the Murtala Mohammed Square, Kaduna on Friday night.

“Already we have 21 clubs, which is very big. We have broken the record. We hope all of them will come, but so far we have broken the record,” he said.

According to him, Nigeria’s Representatives, Nigerian Customs team are in camp already, ahead of the serving office of the competition on April 1, 2025.

“The Customs team and other teams will still be in camp towards 1st April for the African Women’s Club Championship. So we all know that, but we are going to do our best to go back to the camp.

“I’m told the Customs team are going back to the camp and continue training towards hosting of the African Women’s Club Championship,” he said.

On the 2025 President Beach Volleyball Championship, he described it as a huge success.

“Now, first and foremost, we want to thank the Kaduna State Government for allowing us to use the Murtala Square facility.
Actually, that has also gingered in bringing crowds to the competition.

“Number two, also, we believe in grassroots development.
We had to go to schools to bring out the students from their schools. As you can see, a lot of them are looking up to next year, President’s Cup, to play under 17, which we are very happy with,” he said.

He added that, “And number three is that almost all the players of volleyball have realized that Nigeria, today, in the female, we are number one ranked in Africa.

“So, our players, Esther and Panela have traveled around the world, and you know, everybody wants to do the same thing, so they are now an example to the younger ones. So, I think that is a good improvement,” he said.

Fielding questions on other activities of the NVBF, he said that Nigeria is working hard towards the qualification for next year’s Olympic Youth Games.

“Take note, in 2026, Africa is going to host the Olympic Youth Games in Senegal and Nigeria will not want to lose that ticket.

“Being the first country currently ranking number one in Africa, particularly for the female team, So we want to be in Senegal next year, 2026,” he said.
