Advocacy group urges communities, states to fix affordable rent for corps members

The Corpers’ Journey Advocacy Network (CJAN) has called on community leaders, landlords, and state governments across Nigeria to introduce fair and affordable rent pricing systems for corps members serving in their respective areas.

In a joint statement released by Taiwo Ajayi, Founder, and Boluwatife Adedokun, Executive Director of the Corpers’ Journey Advocacy Network (CJAN), the organization expressed concern over the growing hardship faced by corps members who struggle to secure decent accommodation during their National Youth Service Year due to high rent costs.

“Many corps members are forced to live in unsafe or overcrowded environments because they cannot afford the high rent demanded in most communities,” the statement read. “These young Nigerians are serving their country under modest allowances, and it is only fair that communities reciprocate by making accommodation more accessible and affordable.”

The advocacy group emphasized that affordable rent will not only ease the financial burden on corps members but also encourage them to contribute more meaningfully to the development of their host communities.

CJAN further urged state governments to collaborate with landlords and traditional institutions to establish corpers-friendly housing policies, possibly through designated hostels or rent subsidy schemes.

“The NYSC scheme was designed to promote national unity and development. However, without basic welfare support like decent housing, many corps members lose the motivation to serve effectively,” the statement added.

The organization reaffirmed its commitment to continue championing the welfare and rights of Nigerian youths, especially corps members, through advocacy, policy engagement, and partnerships that create long-term impact beyond the service year.
