Medical students at the University of Ibadan (UI) protested at the University College Hospital (UCH) because the hospital had been without power for more than 100 days. The students, who train at this teaching hospital, say the lack of electricity has made it very hard to learn, treat patients, and live normally.
On Monday, the students held up signs saying things like “We are tired of 100 days of darkness; Save UCH” and asked the government to step in and help. The power problem started in November 2024 when the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) cut off UCH’s electricity because of unpaid bills.

During the protest, the Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, met with IBEDC’s management at UCH to discuss the ongoing power problem. The students demanded that the minister fix the situation, which has been getting in the way of their studies and medical work. Bolaji Aweda, who leads the UI student union, reminded everyone that tertiary healthcare institutions were supposed to get a 50 percent discount on their electricity bills.
Adelabu told the students that the government and UCH leaders would look into the real causes of the problem and find a lasting solution. He promised that IBEDC would soon turn the power back on at the hospital. Just last month, these same students had walked from their campus through the city streets with signs to draw attention to the power outage.
