ADC Won’t Appease Those Trying To Destabilise Party

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has vowed to engage with aggrieved members while refusing to tolerate individuals with “ulterior motives” seeking to destabilise the party.

The party’s interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made the statement on Saturday, while speaking to journalists in Abuja.

Abdullahi alleged that some political agents were attempting to undermine the opposition, similar to tactics previously used against the PDP, Labour Party, and Social Democratic Party (SDP).

“We have people, even within leadership ranks, who voluntarily resigned their positions. Some have also expressed grievances against the party,” he said.

He added that while legitimate grievances had been addressed satisfactorily, “when people act belligerently, with clear ulterior motives to destabilise the party, we cannot continue appeasing such individuals.”

He emphasised that the ADC remained united and not factionalised.

He noted that the current leadership emerged from the 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which was observed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in line with legal requirements.

Abdullahi also dismissed claims that a recent court order restrained the party’s leadership, describing the reports as “false and misleading” and branding those spreading them as “agents of destabilisation.”

He stated, “The court only rejected the prayer and requested our appearance on 15 September. INEC has already recognised our leadership.”

Abdullahi further affirmed that the leadership was focused on building the party, adding, “We’ve taken our decisions, moved on, and are focused on building our party.”

Highlighting the significance of INEC’s recognition, he said it allowed party leaders such as Sen. David Mark and Mr. Rauf Aregbesola to legitimately issue membership cards.

Abdullahi also dismissed criticisms by former presidential candidate Dr. Dumebi Kachikwu, noting that he was not an ADC member and therefore had no authority to comment on the party.

On future prospects, Abdullahi insisted that the ADC would continue to strengthen its base, warning that the ruling party “will be shocked in future contests.”
