In a bid to increase women’s participation in politics, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Lagos State chapter has taken a significant step by organizing a training programme aimed at empowering women to play prominent roles in frontline politics.
This was disclosed in a press statement by Mabel Oboh, the Director of Communications, ADC Lagos state chapter.
According to Oboh, the training, facilitated by UN Women International, was designed to equip women with the necessary skills and knowledge to transition from campaign support to frontline political contestants.
Oboh added that the “From Margins to Mainstream” programme, held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Conference Centre, saw participation from notable ADC Lagos women leaders, including Mrs. Chinyere Ezeani, Deputy State Woman Leader, and Elizabeth Ekanem, Chairperson of Eti-Osa LGA.
“The training focused on practical sessions to shift the perception of women’s political roles, emphasizing their potential to engage actively as candidates.”
The communications director stated further that, at the end of the programme, all attendees who fully participated were awarded certificates, acknowledging their commitment to advancing women’s political empowerment.
The ADC Lagos Woman Leader, Hon. Kupoluyi Atinuke, expressed confidence that the party will see a huge change in women’s activities in politics, with initiatives to sensitise women into politics, using the knowledge of certified members.
Oboh recalled that, the initiative aligns with the ADC’s pledge of 50% representation for women and youth, as announced by the ADC National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola.
“The party’s commitment to fostering gender equity and inclusive governance is evident in its efforts to empower women for frontline politics,” she said.
