Adamawa: Stakeholders demand sustained social, emotional learnings in schools

Over 400 stakeholders in the education sector, comprising primary and secondary schools teachers as well as education managers have called for the sustainability of social and emotional learning in schools in a bid to change the academic narratives in Adamawa state.

The stakeholders was drawn from five Local Government Areas (LGAs) including Mubi North, Mubi South, Maiha, Michika and Madagali of Northern Senatorial district of Adamawa state.

They made their position known at a three-day training workshop in Mubi, organised by Adamawa state Ministry of Education and Human Development under its GPE-TESS programme conducted for teachers and education managers across the 21 LGAs in the state to equip their capacity.

Speaking during the training, the master trainer for Mubi zone, Hajiya Hadiza Dauda, a lecturer with Adamawa state Polytechnic Yola, called for sustainability of this training, especially in the state, which would go a long way in tackling so many challenges bedeviĺing students in schools and change the narratives of education, not only in Adamawa state, but in Nigeria as whole.

She explained that the training has really impacted on the teachers and changed their thinking and perspectives, moving them from where they are before the training to where they ought to be equipped with new ideas and strategies on how to impact on their students in helping them to overcome stress, frustrations and relate with their environment and resolve conflicts.

According to her, with this training, students will have more knowledge of emotional regulations and their brains will be developed with so many ideas that will prepare them to handle and overcome whatever situations that might come their ways.

Also speaking, Dr.Ibrahim Nurudeen Jungur, dean school of Early Childhood and Primary Education, Federal College of Education (FCE) Yola, also called for sustainability of the training because of the various socio-economic crisis being faced in the state due to effects of insurgency and the need to bring out citizens that will see Nigeria as their country and see everybody as equal.

He further added that if this kind of training continued without stop, it will change the fortun̈e of education in the state and Nigetia as a whole and the end of it all, both the public and private institutions will adopt same system and approach to teaching.

He said the training was about how individuals can relate very well with their environment in a peaceful and respectable manner.
