AC Milan sporting director Igli Tare has confirmed that the club are monitoring Manchester United striker Rasmus Højlund as they seek attacking reinforcements before the close of the transfer window.
The 22-year-old Dane was left out of United’s squad for their 1-0 defeat against Arsenal on Sunday, amid growing speculation over his future.
While Højlund has previously stressed his desire to remain at Old Trafford, the £73.7m arrival of Benjamin Šeško from RB Leipzig has placed his role in Erik ten Hag’s side under serious threat.
“Højlund is a good option for us,” Tare told Sport Mediaset ahead of Milan’s 2-0 Coppa Italia win over Bari.
“We are evaluating him these days, but the transfer market is unpredictable. We know we must strengthen in that position, and we need players who can bring something extra to this group.”
Tare also confirmed Milan’s interest in Juventus forward Dušan Vlahović as the Rossoneri assess multiple striker targets.
Højlund, who joined United from Atalanta last summer, was already benched for the final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina, with Mason Mount deployed in a false nine role. On Sunday, Mount again started in attack, while Šeško and Joshua Zirkzee came off the bench.
“It is a fight for places,” United boss Ruben Amorim said after the Arsenal defeat. “Rasmus has similar characteristics to Benjamin Šeško, so we need to make choices. We’ll see what happens in the market.”
With Milan searching for a long-term No. 9 and United open to reshaping their frontline, Højlund’s future could be one of the defining stories of the final weeks of the transfer window.
