Abuja Doctors Threaten Total Shutdown Over Colleague Held by Kidnappers for 16 Days

Members of the Nigerian Medical Association, Federal Capital Territory (NMA-FCT) chapter, have issued an ultimatum: a complete shutdown of medical services and peaceful street protests unless security agencies act swiftly to rescue their abducted colleague, Dr. Chinonye Nwachukwu, who has been in captivity for 16 days.

The young physician, a Nigerian graduate trained in Ukraine who returned home to serve at Garki Hospital, was kidnapped on October 21, 2025, while en route to work.

Kidnappers demanded N38 million ransom and warned of harm if police intervened.NMA-FCT President Dr. Emeka Ayogu expressed outrage over the lack of progress despite immediate reports to the Department of State Security (DSS), FCT Police Command, and the Minister of the FCT.

“Our colleague remains in captivity with no communication allowed. The family paid an initial ransom, but the abductors broke their promise to let her speak with her father,” he said.

“If Dr. Nwachukwu is not released unconditionally and immediately, doctors in Abuja will down tools or take to the streets.”

Ayogu highlighted the irony of the situation amid Nigeria’s “japa” brain drain: “Her family sold personal belongings to fund her education abroad, yet she chose to return and serve her country.

It would be a tragedy if the government does nothing.”Vice Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Nasiru warned, “This is unacceptable in any society with functional governance. We are ready to demonstrate if doctors remain in danger.”Dr. Uchenna Aniebue added, “The NMA-FCT is bleeding. Every night, we think of her unknown condition. Bring Chinonye home.”

In solidarity, Nigeria Dental Association FCT Chairman Dr. Theophilus Agho appealed directly to the kidnappers: “She is a young graduate who hasn’t yet lived her life. Release her. We urge security agencies to intensify efforts, she is a daughter, a doctor, and a friend to many.”

The association says it has exhausted diplomatic channels and will escalate if no rescue occurs soon.
