Abuja Court Remands Lawyer, Four Others Over Cyberbullying of Senator Umar

Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of legal practitioner Ahmed Abdulrahman and four co-defendants Daure David, Ishaq Abubakar Muhammed, Abdulrashid Abdullahi Musa, and Nasiru Usman Abubakar at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Area 10, Abuja, until November 10, 2025.

The order follows their arraignment on Thursday by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on an 11-count charge involving cyberbullying, advance fee fraud, and extortion targeting Senator Shehu Buba Umar, Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to all charges.Prosecution counsel Victor Okoye requested a trial date and urged the court to remand the accused at Kuje Correctional Centre.

Defence counsel Affis Matanmi applied for bail for Abdulrahman, citing his status as a Supreme Court-enrolled lawyer who had honoured prior administrative bail and posed no flight risk or threat to the investigation.

Okoye opposed the application, alleging that Abdulrahman committed two additional cyberbullying offences after his administrative release and featured in five of the 11 counts.

He argued that no legal provision grants preferential treatment to lawyers accused of crimes under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act or the 1999 Constitution.

After hearing both sides, Justice Ajumogobia directed the remand at FCID to enable the defence to file a further affidavit responding to the prosecution’s counter-affidavit.

The case was adjourned to November 10, 2025.Key Charges Count 1: Conspiracy to cyberstalk Senator Buba Umar in 2025, contrary to Section 27(1)(b) and punishable under Section 21(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015 (as amended in 2024).

Count 3: Abdulrahman allegedly posted defamatory videos on TikTok (“Kibanna Channel”) and YouTube falsely linking the senator to banditry sponsorship, intending to incite unrest and cause fear of death—contrary to Section 24(1)(b) of the same Act.

Another Count: Daure David allegedly attempted to extort ₦5 million from the senator under the pretext of quelling planned protests.

Senator Buba commended security agencies for the arrests, denied the allegations, and urged Nigerians to verify information and maintain peace. “I remain committed to the welfare of Bauchi South and will continue serving with integrity,” he stated.
