The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), has threatened to disrupt the planned student resumption and upcoming convocation ceremony unless the Ondo State government clears outstanding salary arrears.
The warning follows a strike initiated last month by the university’s academic staff, which has paralysed academic activities on campus due to unpaid salaries.
Boluwaji Oshodi, Chairman of AAUA’s ASUU branch, accused the state government of neglecting the lecturers’ plight despite their prolonged patience.
“We have been patient and tolerant for a long time, but this time, we won’t be again. Our people have been pushed to the wall,” Oshodi stated.
He highlighted the union’s unsuccessful attempts to meet with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and described the harsh conditions faced by lecturers, including conducting examinations “on an empty stomach.”
In response, Ondo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Igbekele Ajibefun, refuted claims of government neglect.
He stated that the Aiyedatiwa administration has consistently released monthly subventions to AAUA and other state-owned tertiary institutions without delay.
Ajibefun emphasized ongoing engagements with the striking lecturers to resolve the dispute and assured the public that the issues would be addressed soon.
The standoff threatens to disrupt academic activities further and delay the university’s convocation, heightening tensions in Ondo State’s education sector.
