Former Kano State Governor and ex-National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has strongly dismissed the Kano State Government’s call for his arrest over alleged inciting comments about forming a militia group, describing the demand as “reckless, baseless, and a desperate attempt to divert attention from governance failures.”
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, Ganduje accused Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration of neglecting rising insecurity across several local government areas while engaging in political witch-hunting.
“The call for my arrest is nothing but political theatrics by a governor who has abdicated his primary responsibility of protecting lives and property,” the statement read.
“Instead of addressing the escalating security crisis ravaging Kano, Governor Yusuf is chasing shadows and looking for scapegoats to cover his glaring incompetence.”
Ganduje highlighted communities in Bagwai, Shanono, Tsanyawa, and other areas that he said have been left vulnerable to attacks, with little or no response from the state government.
“At a time when our people are living in fear, the governor has neither visited the affected communities nor shown any empathy to victims of these attacks,” he added.
“His continued absence in moments of crisis reveals a leadership that is completely disconnected from the people.”
The former governor defended his own eight-year tenure (2015–2023), stating that Kano enjoyed relative peace and stability throughout his administration, earning national recognition for effective security management.
“Dr. Ganduje has never been associated with violence or any action that undermines the peace of Kano State,” the statement emphasized, contrasting his record with what it called the “current administration’s ineptitude and lack of direction.”
Ganduje urged Governor Yusuf to focus on fulfilling his constitutional duties rather than “peddling unfounded allegations and issuing frivolous statements.”
“True leadership is shown through action, responsibility, and compassion, not through press conferences designed to distract from failure,” he concluded.
The backlash follows the Kano State Government’s recent demand for Ganduje’s arrest over comments interpreted as inciting the creation of a private security outfit, amid ongoing political rivalry between the APC and the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the state.
