Yusuf-Ogunleye spoke on Sunday, during the finals of the zonal events of the festival, featuring 10 different sports across various communities in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event which began on Nov. 6, will run till Dec. 6.
According to him, the initiative aligns with President Tinubu”s vision to use sports as a tool for engagement, empowerment and economic opportunity.
“We are aware that the GMT Sports Festival was inaugurated here in Ondo; We are doing this in line with the vision of Mr President, that is why we call it President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Sports Festival,” he said.
He noted that the festival had already been held in several zones, including Ikare and Okitipupa, adding that the finals will be held in Akure.
According to him, the programme has re-energised community participation in sports, and has created a sense of unity in the state.
“Since we started, this programme has unified our people and engaged our youths; We have been able to discover talents and keep young people occupied.
“It has been a long time since we had this kind of unifying event where sports talent can be discovered,” he added.
The DG added that the festival is part of a broader GMT agenda, supported by the Minister of Interior, Mr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and aimed at promoting the President’s programmes at the grassroots.
