Nasarawa state government said it has arrested 96 persons for violating the environmental sanitation laws across the 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
Chief Prosecutor Officer of the state ministry of environment and natural resources, Abubakar Mohammed, disclosed this on Saturday, while briefing newsmen after the November sanitation exercise in Lafia.
He explained that the offenders were arrested for transacting their private businesses while the sanitation exercise was on.
Mohammed noted that their actions violated the provisions of section 9 (2) of the state environmental sanitation Law.
He said the defaulters were prosecuted by various mobile courts at their respective LGAs to serve as a deterrent to others.
However, the state secretary, West Management and Sanitation Authority, Christopher Abari, announced plans to revitalise two waste recycling plants in Lafia and Karu LGAs towards improving waste management, reduce pollution, and promote a healthy environment.
He said the plants, located in Ungwar Rere of Lafia and Auta Balefi in Karu LGAs have been underutilised, but the state government is set to restore them to full operation.
