The Benue State government has sealed another hospital as its clampdown on unprofessional medical practice intensified across the state.
State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Paul Ejeh Ogwuche, on Friday shut down St. John’s Hospital, Otukpo, after an enforcement team uncovered violations, including a reported case of double mastectomy allegedly carried out on November 25 without adherence to clinical guidelines.
Ogwuche said the health facility acted without procedure in cutting off a woman’s two breasts.

He added that the facility was also found to be operating under unsafe conditions and flouting approved treatment protocols.
The commissioner noted that following the discovery, the hospital was sealed immediately, while the Medical Superintendent was issued a query and ordered to report to the Ministry for further investigation.
Ogwuche stressed that Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration will not tolerate quackery or any practice that endangers patients, noting that the state will continue to enforce strict compliance with professional standards in all health facilities.
Earlier, the ministry had shut down St. Peter and Paul Community Health Centre and Maternity in Lessel, Ushongo Local Government Area, over alleged gross professional misconduct.
