A night of deep reflection and admiration marked the tribute held this week in memory of Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akin Shuga. The celebrated bandleader’s influence still reverberates across Nigeria’s live-band scene, and the event, held at the Five Palm in Oniru, Lagos, drew family members, close friends, industry colleagues, mentees, and longtime admirers. All gathered to share stories that collectively captured his spirit, humility, and relentless dedication to music.
The evening, held on Tuesday, November 25, underscored Akin Shuga’s multiple roles: a beacon of love within his family, a trailblazing musician, and a beloved mentor whose warmth and vision continue to inspire a new generation.
Pastor Femi Oludare, elder brother of the deceased, opened the tribute with a heartfelt recounting of their profound bond. “Akinloye was very dear to me as a junior brother,” he said, recalling moments that highlighted his brother’s love for family. Oludare also acknowledged his brother’s role in teaching him the importance of family leadership. He concluded with a powerful summation of his brother’s impact: “Your impact will always be remembered by all those you touched with your light. You were a grandmaster in your profession and a great inspiration.”
Echoing this sentiment was Otunba Abimbola Ashiru, a mentor to the deceased, who first encountered Akin Shuga over 25 years ago when the young artist was just beginning his career. Ashiru shared a vivid memory of their connection. “He sought my mentorship, and I was happy to support him. What began as a professional relationship blossomed into a beautiful bond, he saw me as a big brother, confidant, and friend.”
The emotional evening continued with Tunde Adewale, a longtime friend, delivering the vote of thanks. Adewale reflected on their shared journey and humble beginnings when Akin Shuga first envisioned a successful future for live-band music in Nigeria. “Your gift of friendship and brotherhood is one of the best things in my life. I will continue to hold and cherish this for the rest of my life,” Adewale shared, acknowledging that Akin Shuga “saw the potential, paved the way for many others in the industry, and left us a blueprint of passion and excellence.”
Pastor Tosin Martins delivered the benediction, offering solace to the grieving family. He urged loved ones to trust in divine providence while keeping the musician’s legacy alive, affirming that, “Though he departed, Akin will continue to live on.”
As condolences continue to pour in from across the nation and beyond, his family and friends remain steadfast in celebrating a life that, though ended, remains a guiding light for all who knew him.
