Tinubu Joins ECOWAS Virtual Summit on Guinea-Bissau Coup Crisis

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday participated in an extraordinary virtual summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), convened urgently to address the escalating political and security crisis in Guinea-Bissau following a military coup.

The high-level meeting, held via Zoom and attended by other West African leaders, focused on assessing the fallout from Wednesday’s overthrow of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, who was arrested by the military.

The junta has since announced General Horta Nta Na Man as head of a transitional government for one year.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the summit condemned the unconstitutional change as a violation of ECOWAS protocols on democracy and good governance, amid growing concerns over regional stability.

Leaders, including Tinubu who served two terms as ECOWAS Chairman until June 2025 emphasised the imperative for enhanced regional cooperation, constructive dialogue, and sustained diplomatic efforts to restore constitutional order and prevent further destabilisation in the fragile West African nation.

The virtual gathering signals ECOWAS’s firm resolve to counter the resurgence of coups in the sub-region, with Nigeria pledging to collaborate with international partners to ensure a swift return to democratic governance in Guinea-Bissau.
