Breaking: Top Northern Governor Declares Friday as Public Holiday, Gives Reason


Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state has declared that Friday, November 28, would be a public holiday in the state. This was to respect and honour the late Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi.

This is as the burial of the late Islamic scholar was scheduled for the same day in line with Islamic rites.

This was disclosed in a statement by Mukhtar Gidado, the media aide to the governor, adding that the decision was to allow the workers in the state, students and followers of the late Islamic scholar, as well as the general public, to take part in the funeral of the scholar and pay their last respect to the famous leader of the Tijjaniyyah sect.

Gidado further explained that the government recognised the contribution and impact of the late Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi. His life and legacy, dedication to Quranic education and Islamic scholarship, his spiritual mentorship, as well as the promotion of peace, moral uprightness and unity across the country and beyond.

Sheikh Bauchi, the leader of Tijaniyyah adherents in Nigeria, died on Wednesday, November 26. He is believed to be 98.

Profile of Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi

Sheikh Dahiru studied under scholars like Sheikh Tijani Usman Zangon-Bare-bari, Shaykh Abubakar Atiku and Sheikh Abdulqadir Zaria. He received the Tijjaniyyah Tariqah (spiritual path). His father was a Tijani ‘muqaddam’ (leader) who was authorised on the spiritual path.

Until his death, Dahiru Bauchi was the deputy chair of the fatwa committee of the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) in Nigeria.
