Abuja residents have commended the citywide installation of solar-powered street lights in Abuja.
The installation has improved public lighting, enhance security, and promote energy efficiency.
The project, known as the “Light Up Abuja Project,” is a major initiative aimed at enhancing security and promoting sustainable urban development which was launched by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Nyesom Wike, on October, 2025.
Blueprint observed that it covers major areas including Apo, Utako, and several other districts.
It also involves replacing outdated street lights with solar-powered alternatives and installing new ones in previously underserved areas.
Some of the residents who spoke to Blueprint commended the initiative and called on government to spread the development across the FCT and other suburbs.
A resident of Apo, Mrs. Mariyam Abdulsalma, commended the effort, saying it would help reduce insecurity at night and also beautify the area.
Another resident, Joyce Maidariya, urged the government to prioritise maintenance after installation.
During a visit to the construction site at Utako district, one of the workers, Mr. Aminu Ismail said: “We are working under the FCDA project, and our coverage includes many areas of Abuja.
He added that it is a massive job, and the goal is to provide stable solar lighting across the city.
He said the project will lower electricity costs and help ensure well-lit, safer communities throughout the Federal Capital Territory.
